Hi! I’m Kate Woodman, owner and artist at The Backdrop Studio. My foray into backdrops started in 2014, when, tired of trying to find that elusive perfect backdrop for my own photography projects, I started hand painting my own. What began as a passionate hobby quickly gained traction and turned into a bustling side business, Custom Canvas Backdrops.

Over the next few years, as I found my photography trajectory shifting, my own backdrop needs evolved beyond that of the traditional textured canvas. Taking inspiration from the classical historic portrait—from the Mona Lisa to American Gothic and everything in between—I wanted to incorporate more environmental elements into my backdrops.  Utilizing my own existing photograph database, I began create digital “painterly” backdrops, which I could then print out or digitally composite into my work.

I founded The Backdrop Studio in 2019 to share my backdrops—both hand crafted and digitally created—with you. Combining my love of classical art and photography, each of these backdrops is custom designed to fit a variety of aesthetics and subjects, providing a delicate balance of visual interest that will set your images apart, without overpowering your subject.  These backdrops were created with a timeless quality in mind, so whether you want to recreate the painterly look of old, or juxtapose old and new, The Backdrop Studio is sure to have something for you.
